The Gothic Cologne Cathedral and the museum of roman history

As one of the world’s wonders, the magnificent Cologne cathedral points its 487 feet high spires into the sky, like fingers of a hand raised to swear an oath. Started 1248 A.D., it took more than 632 years to complete this largest and most authentic of gothic cathedrals. The interior is awesome. The 7 foot reliquary of the three Magi (1200 A.D.) is the most outstanding work of art in gold and enamel of the middle ages. More windows of medieval stained-glasses pictures cannot be found anywhere else.

Cologne is an old Roman city dating back to the year 50 A.D. when an major army camp was raised to the status of a “Colony” colonia (hence the name) for legionnair veterans.

When Cologne was rebuilt following its almost total destruction form bombs in WWII, countless objects of roman history and artifacts were brought to light and are now on display in the museum of Roman History (adjacent to the cathedral).

The huge Dionysos mosaic floor, incredible glass-works and tomb stones with inscriptions of roman veterans and many stone portraits make up these truly sensational collections.
