Taking the Autobahn south we first go to Koblenz and drive up to the huge 19th century fortress Ehrenbreitstein with a interesting history (video show)

From up there is a beautiful view to the national monument “Deutsches Eck”, where Germany’s most prominent rivers meet, the Rhine and the Moselle

Marksburg, the only Rhine castle was never destroyed
Continuing south along the river Rhine with its castles and vineyards we go to a truly remarkable and unique spot: the 11th century Marksburg castle towering over the river, the only Rhine castle in its original condition, since it was never conquered or damaged. Great tour inside the “Burg”.
From there it is only a short distance to the romantic, legendary Loreley rock, with a beautiful view over the treacherous river bends which where fatal to so many boatsmen.

The famous poem by the German writer Heinrich Heine was given a masterful translation by Mark Twain.
